Princess Alice accompanied her husband when he served as Governor-General of South Africa from 1924–1931. During their time in South Africa, Lord and Lady Athlone had a coastal beach house constructed at Muizenberg,  a beach suburb of Cape Town, which still stands today and is one of South Africa's national monuments. South Africa is now the ninth-biggest wine producer in the world, with 102 000ha of vineyards representing 3 percent of total global production.
